Each of the General Education classrooms have a different policy on homework and the classroom teacher should be contacted for more specifics. I am here to help your student to understand, plan for, and increase their independence with their class and homework assignments. Please contact me if you have any questions and concerns.
Home-to-School Connection
There are many ways for your student to bring their learning home. One way is in the form of homework. Others may be projects, games, or activities. It is important to your child's learning and growth that you, their parent, are informed and involved with the learning process. Your involvement in their learning at this age can impact their engagement with learning for the future!

- Read with or to your child for at least 20 minutes. This can be books, signs, cereal boxes, magazines...the list is endless! Any and all opportunities for reading are helpful for your child's reading development.
- Encourage them to use math and math strategies for real life situations such as buying fruit for the week at the grocery store, measuring ingredients for dinner or a snack, or talking about time.
- Use technology! There are many links to wonderful websites on the Resources Page
- Encourage your child to explain the new activities and concepts they are learning.
Additional Support
Sometimes the terminology used in the classroom, specifically by the teachers, can be confusing if you have not heard the terms before. There are a lot of resources on the web, but they can be even more confusing or difficult to navigate. I have included some parent-friendly websites and articles that explain the specific vocabulary and activities used in the classroom.
- Literacy (Reading) Vocabulary - The vocabulary teachers use to describe the different levels and aspects of literacy.
- Common Core ELA and Math Standards (CCSS)- The standards used by teachers around the country as expectations for learning for the grade.
- CCSS in kid-friendly terms - The Common Core Standards written for students to understand. Each grade is a separate PDF forms.
- Reading Inventories are used to determine a student's current reading levels, from their independent to their frustrational levels. This website gives a brief description of the different types of assessments used to find a student's level.
- Science Standards - The standards adopted to determine a student's proficiency in Science skills.
