Welcome to a new year, the 2021-2022 school year! The past two years have been very different because of the COVID closures and restrictions, however we are looking forward to a new year and hopefully some sense of normalcy.
With the new school year, I have also transitioned to a new school, new district, and a new role. I am now with San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) and I am serving as a Resource Specialist at Foster Elementary. While I am new to the SDUSD team, I am not new to SDUSD as I attended the same cluster of schools for my education. I am looking forward to meeting all of my new families and to making this year the best year yet!

Nice to meet you!Welcome to Cajon Valley Middle! I am excited to be here and I look forward to meeting all of you!
While I am new to the school and the district, I am a San Diego native and I have been teaching in Los Angeles. This is my sixth year teaching, but I am new to middle school, just like some of the students. Head on over to my MEET THE TEACHER page to learn more about me. Please feel free to contact me using this site or email me at [email protected] or [email protected] Note: Please allow up to a week for response, though most will be quick! Welcome back to school!
It's that time of year, school is back in session. I have updated the calendar to reflect this years dates for holidays, breaks, and parent conferences. Please let me know if I forgot anything! Ms. Shana and I are happy to start the year and we are geared up for a successful academic year. Again, we are a 3rd/4th/5th split. We are getting our weekly calendar arranged as everyone's direct services are scheduled with LAS, OT, and other providers. I will post our general weekly schedule soon. Back to school night is coming up soon, mark your calendar! Tuesday August 28 from 5:45-7pm. Join us in the auditorium at 5:45 for introductions and follow me back to the classroom for an overview of our program. As always, we encourage you to leave your student at home or with another caretaker so that parents can ask all their questions and not have to take care of your student. Students will be encouraged to attend Open House in April to share all of their learning from the year. See you soon! Its about that time, I am at the end of my pregnancy and will be going on maternity leave. I want to assure you that I have selected a wonderful substitute to cover my leave and most of the students are very familiar with her. Ms. M was my maternity leave substitute last time (Fall 2015) and has subbed for me a few times since. She is very kind, gentle, and supportive but can be firm when necessary.
I know that the time I am on leave will go smoothly, I am not worried about it and I hope you are comforted as well. Please know that I will be occasionally checking my email and Class Dojo but that I cannot guarantee timely responses. Please share any positive experiences though, I love hearing how well things are going. For my fifth grade families: I am planning on coming back at the end of the year to finish up and celebrate culmination with you. I am excited for your child's next adventure, in Middle School! Here at Winnetka Elementary, we are very fortunate that a former teacher, Ms. Shore, wrote a grant and got us an amazing garden from The Kitchen Community. Since Ms. Shore retired last year, I am in charge of our garden. The Kitchen Community supplies our school with seeds and seedlings each year to bring our garden to life.
We started to plant our garden today with the seeds and seedlings provided. We planted lettuce, kale, strawberries, broccoli and so much more. Please make sure to stop by our school garden and ask your student to share with you what they helped to plant. Join our school administration, teachers, and other parents in making important decisions for our school at the ELAC and SSC meetings. ELACELAC stands for English Learner Advisory Committee. The ELAC meets at 8:30am in the Parent Center (Room 28). Light Refreshments will be served. The following is a schedule of meetings and their topics. See the Winnetka School website for more information.
SSCSSC stands for School Site Council. The SSC is a group of school staff and parents that work together to make a plan for the school called Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA). The council is also tasked with ensuring the school is following all federally mandated parent involvement rules. The SSC meets at least six times a year at 3:30pm in the Parent Center (Room 28). The following is a list of meetings and their topics. See the Winnetka School website for more information.
I sent home a survey last week about the school calendar for next school year. Please look it over, fill it out, and return it in your child's homework folder before September 29, 2017.
If you have lost the form or would prefer to complete it online, please visit here to complete the survey online. En espanol. LASUD has created a new system for interacting with your child's school records and information. PASSport stands for Parent Access Support System Portal. This portal can be used to access your child's attendance, grades, and progress towards graduation and/or English Learning status. The portal is also an easy place to update emergency telephone numbers and to connect with me! This is a one-stop online system to securely connect you with your student's essential data. This is especially helpful if you have students in more than one school! One parent log-in works for all of your LAUSD students. Please see this page for additional support.
The Fifth grade classes are preparing for a Constitution Day Assembly on September 27, 2017 to celebrate Constitution Day (September 17). The classes are preparing a skit and three songs to share with the rest of the school. We are also learning about the Constitution in both English Language Arts and Social Studies.
This beat will be used for our Constitution Day rap. We will also sing America the Beautiful. We will also sing our school song, Winnetka Ave School Song to the tune of Grand Ol' Flag. |
