We are so excited to dive into the learning in Room 26! We are happy to see a lot of familiar faces and are enjoying getting to know the new faces. I have attached the powerpoint presentation I meant to have up at Back to School. Feel free to peruse it at your convenience and let me know if you have any questions or comments! We are ready for an awesome year!

Our latest project is researching animals! Who doesn't love animals?
We are starting this project today, so ask your student what animal they chose to research. Here are some sites that you can use with them if they want to show you more: Library Patch - 10 sites to look at KidZone - By classification KidSites.com - A TON of resources We have been working on a lot of projects lately, connecting what we learn in our textbooks to our lives outside the classroom. Our most recent project was a State Report, using our skills in research to learn more about some of the states in our country. We are just putting the finishing touches on that report and beginning a new one. Our next report is a very important one. We are researching jobs and learning more about the job that your child wants to have when they grow up. We value all jobs and want your student to recognize the steps, education, and training that is required to work in the job of their choice. The following websites will be used (with countless others) to help them find a job that interests them and the steps they need to take to get that job. Career Exploration Scholastic Books about Community Helpers This week we are focusing on articles and prepositions during Language Arts and division in math!
Our Spelling list is C-5, which you can practice on Spelling City, here. I know we are going to have a great week! We have been back in school for a week now and we are having a blast!
Unfortunately Ms Shana has been out all week with a broken elbow. We sure hope she recovers quickly! We have been lucky though, Mr. Zack has joined us for the time she is out and he is so helpful. Quick reminder, we are celebrating Martin Luther King, Jr's birthday on Monday and we do not have school. See you on Tuesday! With only a few days left, the end of the school year is near!
I have had an amazing year with my students and am sad that the year is coming to a close. However, I am excited about the amazing growth each child has made through the past nine months. Reading, math, and social skills have flourished as the students grew. It is important to maintain these skills during the summer, especially the new-found reading skills. There are many ways to practice reading skills, the easiest being: READING! :) Other options include intensive reading programs offered though the nearby colleges and universities. Pierce College and CSU Northridge offer summer reading programs with a sliding fee scale typically available. Public libraries are also a great option to keep your child interested in reading, without breaking the bank by buying books that are not always interesting a day later! Please contact me if you have questions about your child's reading level or for suggestions of books. Happy Reading! Recently, our class began investigating mummies as part of our reading curriculum. Your student may begin to ask questions about mummies, mummification, Egypt, and possibly death. We will be examining the process of mummification, as well as discussing the Egyptian culture at the time. We will also learn about a woman who studies mummies, including the South American mummies. If you have any questions or concerns about this topic, please let me know. Additional resources: A website that allows your child to explore the mummification process by making a mummy online. The next holiday that we will learn about and celebrate is Valentine's Day! Because we are a small class, we will be joining another class for a small celebration. Be on the lookout for a note home with the number of students we will be celebrating with, along with their names, if you and your child choose to participate in giving out valentines. If you choose to participate in giving valentines, please be sure to have one for each student. For the celebration, bringing a healthy small snack or treat to share would be appreciated, but not necessary. All treats however, must be store-bought to comply with district safety policy. Thanks! Recently, I learned about some YouTube videos for multiplication and the students loved them. I have shown videos for fractions, holidays, and other subjects within my teaching, but I had not heard these wonderful songs before. Enjoy the video and watch over and over again to practice the multiplication of three!
I have been teaching now for a couple of months at Winnetka Avenue Elementary, and all I can say is wow! The other teachers and staff are so friendly, it already feels like home!
My situation is a little unique so far, with only one student registered on my roster, though it has given me an amazing opportunity to connect with many other teachers. The upper grade SDC teacher, Ms. Garay, and I have had the opportunity to learn and grow from one another as we both began full-fledged teaching positions here at Winnetka. Mrs. Roberts has graciously, and happily opened up her classroom to my student for mainstreaming. The rest of the third-grade team has included me and made me feel like part of their well-oiled machine. I can only hope that the weeks to come continue in this fabulous manner. |
